Fue despedazada por Vishnu y su cuerpo se distribuye en 51 pedazos que dieron nacimiento a 51 templos como el de Calcutta. La estatua en piedra negra de la diosa Kali, basándose en una flor de loto en plata, nos da la bienvenida al templo.

Considerada como la diosa de la destrucción y de la muerte, y parte importante en el mito de la creación del mundo. Como diosa temible, agrupó bajo su culto a una secta que ha sido históricamente considerada como una de las más sangrientas: la de los Thug, palabra cuyo significado es el de “engaño”.

Su origen se basa en el libro sagrado del hinduismo, el Purana, que es donde se relata el mito de la creación del mundo anteriormente mencionado. Cuenta la mitología hindú que un demonio habitaba la Tierra y la dominaba, impidiendo que los humanos pudieran establecerse en ella. Kali fue la diosa que se enfrentó a él, pero ocurría que por cada herida que el demonio recibía, y de cada gota de sangre que de ella manaba, surgía un nuevo demonio. Kali entonces creó de su sudor a dos hijos que la ayudaran en la batalla, dándoles dos pañuelos anudados, llamados “rumal” con los que acabarían con el demonio estrangulándolo.

Homero la menciona como juanita seis brazos en el capitulo donde se va a trabajar en la planta Indu del Sr. Burns, y Apu cambia de deidad segun su conveniencia entre Kali y Ganesh.
